The Lodge and the Villa Riant are the largest, both sleeping six across three bedrooms. The Lessenaar is the one with the mono-pitched roof. The Cube and Cube XL are the compact end.

The individual cottages are privately owned and fitted out differently, which is why the fittings are listed per type rather than promised for the park as a whole. If a specific detail decides your booking, ask us before you book.

What is included in every cottage

Every cottage is self-catering and fully furnished: a kitchen, a living area, two or three bedrooms, and its own garden with a terrace. The Cube XL types and the Lessenaar have a dishwasher. The Lodge has a fully equipped kitchen with a four-ring hob, and the Villa Riant has a fully equipped kitchen too.

Because the cottages are privately owned, the fittings are not identical even within a type. The per-type pages carry what is confirmed for that type, and anything not listed there is worth a phone call rather than an assumption.

Step-free by default, not on request

All six cottage types are on one floor. No stairs to the front door, no stairs inside, no split level, and it is not a special unit you have to ask for: it is every cottage on the park.

That matters if you are travelling with a walking frame or a buggy, if stairs have started to be a nuisance, or if you simply do not want to carry a suitcase up to a mezzanine. It is also the one thing the rental aggregators cannot filter for, so a step-free cottage in the Netherlands is genuinely hard to search for online.

We say step-free and single-storey rather than accessible, on purpose. Door widths and bathroom layouts have not been measured against an accessibility standard, so if you use a wheelchair, ring us and we will describe the actual doorway rather than sell you a word.

Where the park is: Gelderland, on the river Waal

Resort de Betuwe is at Hermoesestraat 13 in Zennewijnen, a hamlet in the Betuwe, the fruit-growing belt of Gelderland. Tiel is around 10 minutes by car. Utrecht is roughly 50 km. Amsterdam is roughly 85 km, which makes it a comfortable day out rather than a neighbour.

The river is behind the park, not in front of it. The dyke starts around 200 metres away; behind it are the water meadows, and the Waal itself is about 600 metres on foot. That is the honest version of "riverside": you walk up onto the dyke and watch the barges go past, you do not step out of the cottage into the water.

The Waal is the busiest navigated river in the Netherlands, so there is always something moving on it. In April the orchards blossom across the whole area, and in September Tiel holds its fruit festival. See the surrounding area for what is worth the drive. Travelling with children? Getting here from the UK

Almost every British guest arrives by car, either on a ferry to the Netherlands or Belgium, or through the Eurotunnel and up through France and Belgium. Once you are on the motorway network the park is straightforward to reach, and having the car with you is worth a great deal here, because the area is rural and the best of it is spread out.

Bring your own driving documents and check your breakdown cover before you set off. On the park itself the speed limit is 5 km/h.

Coming by motorhome or campervan?

There are eight pitches, and each one has its own toilet, its own shower and its own electricity hookup. No shared facilities block. They are for motorhomes only: there are no tent pitches and no caravan pitches.

You can book a pitch online, or by phone or email. Calling also means you get a straight answer about what is free. See motorhome and campervan pitches.

What is open, and what is not

Open: the playgrounds and the football cage. Temporarily closed for building work: the swimming pool, the restaurant and the barn. There is no reopening date.

British guests often expect a pool at a holiday park, so it is better said here than discovered on arrival. Every cottage has its own kitchen, and Tiel is around 10 minutes away for eating out and for the weekly shop. See facilities for the full picture.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a holiday park in the Netherlands directly on a river rather than the coast?

Yes. Resort de Betuwe is in Gelderland, on the river Waal, well inland. The dyke starts around 200 metres behind the park, the water meadows lie beyond it, and the river itself is about 600 metres on foot. So you are in river country with barge traffic and dyke walks, not on a beach and not with the water at the doorstep. There are six single-storey cottage types for 4 to 6 guests and eight motorhome pitches with private facilities.

Are there step-free, ground-floor holiday lodges in the Netherlands?

At this park, all six cottage types are single-storey, so every one of them is step-free to enter and has no stairs inside. It is the standard here rather than a special unit you have to request. We describe it as step-free rather than accessible, because door widths and bathroom layouts have not been measured against an accessibility standard. If you use a wheelchair, call (0344) 651498 and we will describe the actual doorway.

How far is a holiday park in Gelderland from Amsterdam or Utrecht?

From Resort de Betuwe in Zennewijnen, Utrecht is roughly 50 km and Amsterdam is roughly 85 km. Tiel, the nearest town, is around 10 minutes by car, and Schiphol is roughly an hour's drive. Both cities work as day trips by car; neither is close enough to call the park a city base.

Are dogs allowed at holiday parks in the Netherlands?

Policies differ from park to park. At Resort de Betuwe a dog is possible on request, and not in every cottage: four of the six types state that pets are welcome on request, while the Lodge and the Villa Riant do not take pets. Ask before you book, on (0344) 651498 or at info@resortdebetuwe.nl. The dyke and the water meadows start a few minutes from the door, which is the part that actually matters to a dog.
